X-Sieve: cmu-sieve 2.0 Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 16:07:15 -0400 From: Larry Gubas <lngubas@optonline.net> Subject: Telescope To: Jose Ramon Bertomeu <Jose.R.Bertomeu@uv.es> X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 Jose, This is a rare and valuable gem. It was made from about 1905 - 1935 or so. It was dropped when the war in Europe took them out of commercial mode and it was resumed in Jena after the war but with a different style. There should be a huge oak box to hold the instrument and it should be prized. If you look around the objective or the len nearest what you are looking at, you will find the focal length of the telescope and match it to the attached catalog pages from a 1926 Zeiss Astro catalog. I would guess that it is the 80 cm model but I cannot be sure. The engraving should also have a serial number which might help date it. If I were a rich man, I would try and talk you into selling this to me but then it is not yours to sell. This is a rare and precious treasure and still practical in use. I am sorry that the text is in German but these catalogs are almost as rare as the instruments. Did you know that the papal observatory at Castel Gondolfo has several Zeiss instruments that a Jesuit scientist is in charge of. larry Jose-1.jpg Jose-2.jpg
